Michael McGraw - Artist Statement
I began to take photography seriously around the same time that my father had his first heart attack, 12 years ago.  I vividly remember seeing an x-ray of his heart and the complex patterns of its dye-filled veins; it affected me on many levels, including artistically.  A winter study of tree branches followed.

Since that time I have alternated between subjects that use patterns and texture to hide or reveal emotion and meaning, and subjects which are simple and uncluttered that act as a counterpart to my other photos of layered disorder.

I currently have a studio in the Northrup King Building in the Northeast Minneapolis arts district.  I continue to shoot various projects, including and ongoing study of water as a representation of the balance of illness and recovery, unassuming local landmarks, and the Minnesota Rollergirls roller derby team.
